The Story Behind This Painting:
At an art fair in San Diego, a viewer asked if I had any whale paintings; I did not, but it only took a little bit of thinking for this idea to arrive. At first, it was just a whale floating in the sky with a beautiful sunset and clouds. Then, I thought of putting a landscape in the background (I live in Arizona and have been on several backpacking trips in the Grand Canyon. It is special to me, so I chose that as the landscape). Then the idea of this tiny figure reaching out to the whale came into the image, and it was so pleasing to me.
How could this little figure interact with this giant whale? At the time, things were feeling quite hopeless with the Covid pandemic dragging on and new resurgence with the start of school and the delta variant, and the slow progress on infrastructure and climate change. The idea of a child reaching out to this mysterious giant floating whale - giant like the universe is giant and mysterious - climbing in desperation to the tippy top of this peak and on his/her tippy toes fearlessly reaching out to give the whale a message of hope.
There is so much we need to do to reorient how we function as a human society, to help future life flourish on this planet. I don't know the answers. But I do hope that we can come together and live more harmoniously with each other and with nature. Our failure to do so will be catastrophic, and it is already starting. This painting was an expression of that hope.
