The Story Behind This Painting:
I began this painting at the very end of the 2020 Arizona Fine Art Expo - a fine art show in Scottsdale, Arizona where artists work on site for three months while patrons and collectors visit. The show ended abruptly a week early the first week of March due to Covid 19.
Prior to these cats, I had made several paintings with feather boas in them. I found that I really enjoyed capturing their cattywampus nature and bright color, and I wanted to make more of them. At the Expo, one of my booth neighbors, Ans Taylor, introduced me to the work of one of her favorite artists - Ellen Jewett, a sculptor who makes animals with light airy intricate details from nature.
Eventually, I had the idea of these cats made of pink feathers. They looked a little like Ellen Jewett Sculptures. For the background, bookshelves seemed like the perfect setting for these cats, books being like little doorways into the imagination, and I had some great bookshelves in my house that I could photograph.
While I was working on this painting, I was approached by a Gallery in Phoenix that had been following my work on instagram (it is also the gallery that was right next to the parking lot where I had my very first art fair in 2014: The Grand Avenue Craft Fair). They asked me if I would like to do a Solo Show in January of 2021. It was just what I needed to keep motivated during the pandemic, so I started making plans for the art show "Just for Fun".
This painting is one of five paintings included in the "Just For Fun" Show - A collection of paintings done in an imaginative realist style. It was my first virtual art show. The show includes a video that you can find on youtube. The initial gallery show was canceled due to Covid, so I decided to show the series on my own online.
