The Story Behind This Series:
This was a fun little diversion from my normal work. I've done a lot of anthropomorphized animals, but not fruit. I got the idea while I was showing at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale. An artist friend of mine, Suzy Amanblade made some small paintings of bread at the show, and I wanted to do something similar- some quicker little still life pieces. As I thought about it more, an idea for a still life series of apples with gooley eye popped into my head and made me laugh. Laughter is usually a good sign that I will enjoy the subject and want to keep painting. Then this idea and a few others with other fruits came to mind (with all the texture on the cantaloup it wasn't really a quick painting, but it was fun nonetheless). This is my second painting depicting Groucho Marks glasses. Look in the prints section of the website shop for the octopus image titled "Master of Disguise." After this painting, I completed another painting of a cantaloupe entitled "Cantalope" in which the cantaloupe dawns a pair of antlers like a jackalope. That painting is a nod to a painting I completed in 2019 entitled "Jackalopes of the World."
